Jack Rackham, better known as "Calico Jack," was an English pirate captain who roamed the Caribbean during the early 18th century’s Golden Age of Piracy. Born around 1682, possibly in Jamaica, he earned his nickname from his fondness for colorful calico clothing. Rackham rose to prominence in 1718 after mutinying against his captain, Charles Vane, and taking command of their ship. Though not as ruthless or successful as some contemporaries, he’s famed for his crew, which included the legendary female pirates Anne Bonny and Mary Read. Operating primarily in the Bahamas and Cuba, Rackham favored small, swift vessels to plunder merchant ships. His career ended abruptly in October 1720 when he was captured by a British naval sloop near Jamaica, reportedly too drunk to fight. Tried and convicted in Port Royal, he was hanged on November 18, 1720, leaving a legacy tied more to his flamboyant style and notorious companions than his piratical prowess.
