Gary Plauché was an American father from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, who gained national attention on March 16, 1984, when he fatally shot Jeffrey Doucet, a karate instructor who had kidnapped and sexually abused his 11-year-old son, Jody. The incident occurred at Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport as Doucet was being escorted by police following his arrest in California, where he had taken Jody after abducting him. Disguised in a baseball cap and sunglasses, Plauché waited near a bank of payphones and fired a single shot into Doucet’s head at close range, an act captured on live television by a local news crew. Initially charged with second-degree murder, Plauché pleaded no contest to manslaughter and received a seven-year suspended sentence, five years of probation, and 300 hours of community service, avoiding prison time. The case sparked widespread debate about vigilante justice, with Plauché maintaining until his death in 2014 that he had no regrets, believing any parent in his position would have done the same to protect their child.
