Henry Every, the infamous pirate also known as "The Arch Pirate" or "Long Ben." Henry Every was born around 1659 in Devon, England, and began his career as a sailor in the Royal Navy before turning to piracy. He gained infamy in 1695 when, as first mate aboard the privateer ship *Charles II*, he led a mutiny, renamed the vessel *Fancy*, and set off on a daring spree. His most legendary exploit was capturing the *Ganj-i-Sawai*, a treasure-laden Mughal ship, off the coast of India, netting a fortune estimated at over £600,000—equivalent to millions today. After this audacious heist, Every vanished, evading capture and sparking countless rumors about his fate, from retiring in obscurity to dying penniless. Active for only two years, his bold success and mysterious disappearance made him a pirate legend, inspiring tales like Daniel Defoe’s *The King of Pirates*.
Every was arguably one of the most successful of all pirates as he was not hung nor did he die in combat but rather retired a wealthy man. He also inspired many of the other famous pirates of the golden age with his success in the late 17th century.
